At this year’s F8 conference this week, the Facebook Chief Executive Officer clarified that Facebook plans to turn artificial intelligence, universal internet connectivity, as well as virtual and augmented reality into an integral part of their business over the next 10 years! Although this wasn’t a complete surprise due to speculations back in 2016, Zuckerberg unveiled that they will provide a basic set of tools for outside developers to build augmented reality apps, which you can access via the app’s camera. With this type of technology Facebook put’s itself in direct competition with conglomerates Google and Apple who are on the verge of creating parallel universe apps and tools that do not rely on smartphones own marketplaces. As Zuckerberg continues on this road to technical amalgamation is there a future for smartphones? Well there certainly isn’t in Zuckerberg’s eyes.
Well for starters the Facebook billionaire demonstrated the company’s vision on AR in a form of easy-to-wear glasses.
“We don’t need a physical TV. We can buy a $1 app ‘TV’ and put it on the wall and watch it,”
He then progressed with…
“It’s actually pretty amazing when you think about how much of the physical stuff we have doesn’t need to be physical.”
As you can tell from this statement, he isn’t just talking about TV’s, he also continues to include that this technology can be adopted in smartphones, smartwatches, tablets, fitness trackers, basically anything that utilises a screen to function. To bring his idea to life Zuckerberg even demonstrated how a street art installation that appears as a blank wall, reveals a mural after you wave the Facebook Camera app over it.
The only problem with this is that there is a huge section of the economy that heavily relies on the productions of phones, tablets and TV’s, but although this means a long road ahead for the number one Social Media Platform, this does not deter Zuckerberg, and although he’s in competition with virtually everyone, you can’t help but be excited for such innovative technology!
